Most tallow brands stop at plain fat and a drop of fragrance oil. We go further. Our signature balms are steeped with botanicals so the plant's actual character — not an imitation of it — carries into the finished product.

Our Story

A family kitchen, a slower way.

Render & Roots began in a kitchen in Utica, Illinois, out of a simple frustration: skincare shelves full of ingredients we couldn't pronounce and wouldn't trust on our own family.

So we went back to what worked for generations. We source grass-fed suet, render it slowly and cleanly by hand. Small batches mean every jar is fresh and every scent is intentional — nothing rushed.

You'll find us at local farmers markets and here online. Every purchase supports a family business built from the ground up.

Common Questions

Does tallow smell like beef?

No. Our suet is rendered and filtered until it's virtually odorless, then infused with real herbs or left unscented. What you smell is the botanical, not the fat.

What makes yours "herbal-infused"?

Rather than only adding fragrance oil, we steep real botanicals into the tallow so the plant's actual compounds and character carry through. Scents like Sacred Roots, Midnight Meadow and Vanilla Infused are built this way.

Will it clog my pores?

Tallow is non-comedogenic for most people because its composition mirrors human sebum. If you're acne-prone, patch test a small area first — many with sensitive skin find it balancing.

Is it safe for kids and sensitive skin?

Yes — that's the point. A short, whole-ingredient list (tallow, herbs, beeswax) with no synthetic fragrance or fillers makes it gentle enough for the whole family.

How long does a jar last?

Stored cool and dry, tallow is naturally stable for 12–18 months. A little goes a long way, so a 4oz jar typically lasts months with daily use.

We're handcrafted in Utica, Illinois and sell at regional farmers markets plus online. Local pickup and delivery options are available at checkout.
