If you've never used beef tallow skincare before, this is almost always the first question: does it smell like beef? It's a fair thing to wonder — tallow is, after all, rendered from beef fat. Here's the honest answer, and what's actually happening in the jar.
Where the "beefy" smell comes from
Raw, unrendered beef fat can carry a faint meaty smell, especially if it's rendered quickly at high heat or left unfiltered. That's true of any animal fat — it's the proteins and impurities left behind in the fat that carry the smell, not the fat itself.
Low-quality tallow (rendered fast, filtered once, packaged without further processing) is where that smell tends to survive. It's the main reason people assume all tallow skincare will smell like the meat aisle.
Why ours doesn't
Grass-fed suet only becomes skincare-grade tallow after it's rendered slowly and filtered multiple times — a process that removes the proteins and impurities responsible for that meaty smell. Done properly, the finished tallow is virtually odorless: a clean, neutral fat with no scent of its own.
We render every batch by hand in small quantities specifically so we can control this step. Rushing it, or skipping a filtration pass, is exactly how a brand ends up with beefy-smelling balm — so we don't rush it.
So what am I actually smelling?
Whatever scent you notice in a jar of Render & Roots balm is the botanical, not the fat. We infuse essential oil blends directly into the tallow — not just a drop of fragrance oil on top — so what reaches your nose is genuinely the plant. Citrus Bloom smells like cranberry and mandarin orange. Sacred Roots smells like frankincense and myrrh. Vanilla Infused smells like actual Madagascar vanilla bean, because that's what's steeped into it.
If you pick our Unscented balm, you'll notice it has almost no smell at all — which is the clearest proof the base itself is odorless. There's no beef smell hiding underneath waiting to show up once the fragrance fades.
How to tell if a tallow product is properly rendered
If you're shopping tallow skincare anywhere — from us or elsewhere — a few signs point to quality rendering:
- No meaty or greasy smell at first opening, even in an unscented product.
- A clean, off-white to pale yellow color — not gray or brown, which can indicate impurities weren't filtered out.
- A smooth, non-gritty texture once whipped or melted.
- Transparency about the source — grass-fed, and ideally rendered in small batches rather than industrial quantities.
