One of the most common reasons people switch to tallow balm is wanting something simple enough to use on the whole family — including kids. Here's what actually makes a product gentle, and how to choose the right one for younger or more sensitive skin.
What makes an ingredient list "gentle"
Gentleness starts with what isn't in the jar. Our balms are grass-fed tallow, organic castor oil, and either real herbal infusions or nothing at all — no synthetic fragrance, no preservative cocktail, no filler oils. A short, readable ingredient list means fewer opportunities for a reaction, simply because there's less in the formula to react to.
That's a statement about formulation, not a medical guarantee — every person's (and every child's) skin is different, and a short ingredient list doesn't override individual sensitivities.
Choosing a scent for younger skin
If you're shopping for a child, especially a baby or toddler, we'd point you toward two starting places:
- Unscented — grass-fed tallow and organic castor oil only, with no essential oils at all. The lowest-variable option for very young or reactive skin.
- Vanilla Coconut — a mild, low-intensity infusion many families find works well for kids, though it does contain essential oils and should still be patch tested.
Some essential oils — particularly strong citrus and mint varieties — are generally recommended against for infants and very young children in most aromatherapy guidance, regardless of the brand or source. If you're shopping for a baby under 2, Unscented is almost always the simplest and safest starting point, and we'd recommend checking with your pediatrician before introducing any scented skincare product.
Patch testing for kids
The same rule applies for children as for adults, just with extra caution: apply a small amount to the inner forearm and wait 24–48 hours before using it anywhere else. Kids' skin can be more reactive than adult skin, so this step matters even more here.
Why we don't call it "hypoallergenic"
You'll notice we don't use words like "hypoallergenic" or "pediatrician-approved" on our labels. Those terms aren't standardized or regulated, and we'd rather tell you exactly what's in the jar and let you make an informed decision than lean on a label claim that doesn't actually mean much. Transparency is the whole point.
